PLAY’S STATE-MEANT

THE MEANING, MAGIC AND MISS-CHIEF BEHIND THE ART

I create mixed-media art from paint, found objects, discarded materials, personal memories and happy accidents.

My work begins where the ordinary loses its job description.

A baby wipe becomes a landscape. Tennis balls speak in Braille. A familiar symbol slips out of its official uniform and arrives wearing jewellery. Objects we barely notice reveal another identity, as though they have been waiting for someone to ask: What else could you become?

I rarely begin with a fixed answer. I follow curiosity, excitement, humour and the intelligence of the materials themselves. An accidental mark, misplaced object or apparent mistake may become the doorway into the entire artwork. Rather than correcting every accident, I enter into conversation with it.

THE THREE CREATIVE MASKS THAT JOIN THE PARTY

This is where PLAY becomes both my artist name and my method: loosening certainty, interrupting familiar meanings and allowing the unexpected to emerge.

Beneath the colour and wordplay, my practice explores perception. How much of reality do we experience directly, and how much through inherited symbols, labels, expectations and, most importantly, the state from which we perceive it?

If we change how we see an object, could we also change how we see ourselves and the possibilities available to us?

My work is connected to Play Godass, my map of three creative states: Ass, Badass and Godass. Ass reacts from fear and inherited programming. Badass pushes, controls and tries to prove. Godass becomes curious, receptive and willing to cooperate with the unknown.

Every mode carries its own certainty. PLAY loosens its grip, not to make us believe in nothing, but to make room for something we could not yet imagine, let alone create.

FROM PLAY TO ART-OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Art can emerge from any of these modes, but(t) 🤭 the act of creating can also become the vehicle that moves me between them: from resistance into play, from control into curiosity, from proving into allowing.

I call this process ART-official Intelligence: Absolute Intelligence expressing itself through imagination, "kNEW" kNOWledge, intuition, nature, physical materials, technology, timing and synchronicity.

Artificial intelligence may join the conversation as a responsive tool and creative dance partner, but human author-ship remains in the living: in the experience that forms the idea, the intuition that recognises what matters, the hands that construct the work and the discernment that chooses what stays.

Read how AI joins my creative practice.

Even then, the work is not always finished until the artwork itself decides.

Sometimes an intuitive studio choice later encounters an uncanny person, object or event in the physical world, as though life has created a living mock-up in reply.

I call this SyncroMagic: the moment art, intention and reality reveal that they may have been in conversation all along. My work is not created to decorate certainty. It is created to disturb it playfully, creating just enough space for another possibility to slip through.

Welcome to the PLAY-ground. Nothing here is merely what it seems.
